I have always been fascinated by the beautiful chest buckles with letters used with the traditional Amager costumes that hung in my childhood home.

Besides being used as ornaments, the letters indicated whether a woman could be courted. There are usually four letters. The first is the first letter of the girl’s own name, the second and third letters are the first letters of the father’s first name and surname respectively; the last letter is always D – for daughter.

If the woman is married, the D is replaced by the first letter of the husband’s name.

Once worn by the women in my family as a sign of kinship.
